It's Magic - Dr Bronner's Liquid Soap

Dr. Bronner's Magic Pure Castile Classic Soap is the only soap I have in the house.  I currently have almond in the bathroom and peppermint in the kitchen.  I love these eco-friendly soaps and they contain no chemical nasties. The fragrances are delightful I particularly love the almond as it reminds me of Bakewell Tart.  The peppermint is uplifting and refreshing.

The soap is a runny liquid but do not let this fool you I only use a couple of drops for washing my hands.  It lathers up well and I never find it drying nor does it irritate my eczema.

I stick to using it as hand soap and sometimes take it on holidays for washing out dirty clothes as Dr Bronner is multi purpose.  The bottle states “1 soap for 18 uses”.    I have yet to think of 18 uses but I have read about using it as a shampoo, body wash, carpet cleaner and pet shampoo.

You can buy various size bottles – 118ml, 236ml, 472ml, 944ml, and bigger!  Whatever size you buy it is excellent value for money.  The soap is a concentrated formula and I can make mine go for months when using it as hand soap.   Dr Bronner is easily available online, there are many stockists, I purchase wherever I can find an offer.  The 236ml size usually cost around £5 give or take a few pennies.   The range is not limited to Almond and Peppermint, you can also purchase Lavender, Citrus, Rose, Tea Tree, Eucalyptus and Baby Mild.

Have you tried Dr Bronner Liquid Soaps? What do you think?  Does anyone else know of 18 more uses?

JUST A QUICK NOTE TO SAY....

to my new followers who have joined me via blog
hops.  I hope you are enjoying what I have to say.

Since it is a bank holiday weekend I have time on my hands to plan ahead for my blog so keep following as I have a long list of products to tell you about.  I am also looking into the possibility of organising a giveaway, it just needs a bit more research.

It is nice to have some time on my hands to surf the internet as I find it the best way to discover new products.  One that has caught my eye today is cupcakeorganic.com.  I am drawn in by the super cute packaging and attractive website, I love it.  The most important part for me is when I read "We do not use any petrochemicals, perfumes, dyes, parabens, sulfates, ureas, fillers or any other caustic substances in any products."

My second find of the weekend came via annabellacinderella and her product review on ELF.  I checked out the website with the assumption that ELF would not cater to my chemical free requirements, how wrong was I?  The mineral products are 100% mineral based with no parabens, no preservatives and no chemical dyes and not tested on animals.  Straight away I am attracted to the lipsticks (£3.50) and glosses (£3.00).  The prices are unbelievable.  I hyperventilated when I click on the nail polishes the formula is free of Toluene, Formaldehyde, and Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP).  I have not tried chemical free nail polishes because they cost £10+ so I did a double take when I read £1.50 each.  I think I can feel a spending spree coming on!

Satisfy your chocolate cravings - PART 2

Following on from my post about Nakd bars the connection to this review is chocolate.

I wanted to tell you all about Faith in Nature Chocolate Shower Gel.  This is a wonderful product and makes a great gift for a friend who is always on a diet.  It is free of parabens and SLS and contains no artificial preservatives or colours.  Faith In Nature products carry the BUAV and Vegan logos.

This shower gel lathers well and a little goes a long way when using a bath puff.  It is good value for money at £4.99 for 400ml.  The fragrance is gentle and of natural cocoa so it is not sweet and sickly, you will not come out the shower smelling like a mars bar.

Faith in Nature’s describe this product as Skilfully developed with beneficial aromatherapy oils by our own experts to nourish skin and combat stress, using Nature’s ingredients while caring for the environment. Part of our award winning range of natural beauty products.  For a lusciously fragrant and deeply relaxing bath or shower. Organic Chocolate contains antioxidant flavonoids, to protect against free radicals which can accelerate ageing, and Serotonin and Phenylethylamine, both associated with contented happiness.

Faith in Nature has an extensive product line - hair care, soaps, hand washes, skin care, wipes, deodorants, household cleaners, feminine products.  Best of all you can get yourself some chocolate shampoo and conditioner.

I also know of another chocolate shower gel from Funk Bubble.  I have never tried this one but it was a site I had booked marked under gift ideas.  It is more expensive at £6.15 for 250ml.

Let me know if you have tried this shower gel or any other products from Faith in Nature?

Satisfy your chocolate cravings - PART 1

Stick with me folks this is not a post about a beauty product but does have a connection to a product review I intend to do at a later stage.  I could argue that if you put good things inside your body your skin will thank you for it….it is a bit of a long stretch but stick with me.

My current obsession is Nakd bars.  My allergies mean I have to follow a dairy and egg free diet and a Nakd “nudie” bar is made from raw fruit and nuts, is 100% vegan, gluten, wheat and dairy free and 1 of your 5 a day.

I am addicted to Cocoa Delight.  The bar is soft in texture with little nut pieces throughout.  It is made using dates, raisins, cashews and cocoa.  I love the hint of chocolate flavour and since I cannot eat a regular chocolate bar, it is enough of a chocolate buzz to keep me happy.

These bars are available in other flavours - Pecan Pie, Ginger Bread, Cocoa Orange, Cocoa Mint, Cashew Cookie & Berry Delight.  I know it was difficult work but I could not blog about them without tasting them all first (well that is my excuse and I am sticking to it!).  Cashew Cookie and Pecan Pie are my second favourites.  The only flavour I cannot try is Cocoa Orange unfortunately for me I have an allergy to oranges.

My local Tesco now stocks a 4 x bar box which is great because I had only ever seen them individually at health food stores.  Also look out for other products in Nakd’s range - Oatie Bars, Infused Raisins, Trek Energy bars and Trek flapjacks

The Body Shop Earth Lovers Shower Gel

I read an article at Daisy Green Magazine that The Body Shop has launched a shower gel which is 100% biodegradable, contains no parabens, sulphates, colourants and is soap free.  I was intrigued.  As a teenager I adored The Body Shop, I loved the hippy vibe and company ethics.  Over the years I grew up and so did The Body Shop and I never ventured back for a variety of reasons.  I decided I liked what I had read about this new product so I purchased the Apricot & Basil as that appealed to my senses the most.

Other fragrances include Lemon & Thyme, Mint & Cucumber, Watermelon & Eucalyptus, Fig & Rosemary, Pear & Lemongrass & Fragrance-free.  A 250ml bottle costs £5 which I think is overpriced.

The reason why this shower gel gets the thumbs down from me is because over time I believe it has caused skin irritation.  I have switched shower gels and the problem disappeared.  I must learn to take my own advice I made a classic mistake of being enticed by the packaging and the claims on the front label.

I do find it a bit of a cheek when companies make the ingredients difficult to find.  In this case you have to lift up the label on back of the bottle, the font is tiny and grey on a white background.  Out of curiosity and aided by google (and a lot of squinting) I researched the ingredients.  There are some scary looking words on this ingredients list but most turn out to be natural.  Here comes the BUT...this product contains parfum, sodium benzoate and sodium hydroxide; these are suspect ingredients, from what I understand possible skin irritants.

I have no complaints with the performance of the shower gel, it smells amazing and lathers up well. However, it is my personal opinion that if you have very sensitive skin (like me) I would be cautious with this product and it may be a good idea to patch test.

TEENAGE DREAMS

I thought I would blog about chemical free products for teenage/younger skins.  My teenage years are long gone, so my skin has different needs so I will be blogging about products that may not suit a younger skin. I have done a bit of research and there is a lot of choice for teenagers when it comes to natural skincare.  The products listed below caught my eye and look very appealing.

So here is a list of brands which I suggest you may want to have a closer look at.

Amie Skincare - affordable and available direct from their website or on the high street at Superdrug and Boots.  The range includes eye makeup remover, facial wash, 2 in 1 cleanser & toner, moisturiser, exfoliating polish and a clay mask.

Young & Pure -  affordable with prices similar to Aime.  You can buy direct from website or from MyPure.  This brand carries a larger product range than Amie, it includes Face care, Bath & Body, Haircare and Spot Treatment.

Face Boutique - more expensive than the above two.  It is available from Boots.  Products in this line include face care and bath & body care.

Good Things - this is another affordable range which I have seen at Boots.  Products include cleanser, day moisturiser, exfoliator, cleansing wipes, eye cream & night cream.  Also there is an anti-blemish line which includes a cleanser, mask, spot gel and moisturiser.

Update September 2011 - Since posting I have discovered that some of these brands are not as natural they claim on packaging.  Whilst some ingredients have been removed others have been put in their place.

POWDER & PAINT

I just wanted to send out a big THANK YOU to everyone who joined my blog this weekend.  I finally do not feel like I am talking to myself!  Also, a special HELLO to Vintage Makeup who has been asking me lots of questions on makeup and it has been super fun helping her out.  Some of you might not have spotted our comments conversation so I thought it might be nice to share with you all.

The big stumbling block for me when it comes to questions about make up is I wear very little, I am not a makeup girlie, never have been but I enjoy reading about it, I know totally weird.  My makeup routine consists of foundation, concealer and a bit of lippy or gloss.  I have had so many allergic reactions over the years that it puts me off the stuff.  Chemical free beauty is a new trend, when I was a teenager, the time when you experiment with makeup, I was not aware of its existence, I am not sure it did exist? (I am now in my 30's).

Now chemical free makeup is slowly making a name for itself in the UK but only via online retailers.  I think it is slowly arriving on the high street as I noticed Boots now stock UNE.  This is a brand which contains 98-100% naturally derived ingredients, no mineral oils, no artificial colourings or synthetic fragrances.  The packaging is eco-friendly and recyclable.

When VintageMakeup asked for mascara advice I was a little unsure as I never wear it.  I checked out Love Lula which is my “go to” website for products.  There is a collection of mascaras to be found here and I noticed Lavera Volume gets good reviews.  I have always been impressed with other products from Lavera and have used their foundation in the past.

I was able to offer advice to the next question about Lipsticks.  This time I can point you in the direction of Living Nature, which I know is available via My Pure.  Alternative recommendations are Lavera and Green People (you can also purchase through Love Lula).

The thing is I had not realised VintageMakeup was in the US and all my product knowledge is from the UK.  I did a quick goggle search and found Pristine Planet.  I must admit I think I got lucky after all I was googling from my ipod touch at midnight in bed plus google just automatically wants to give me UK site. This morning I did another google search and found skinbotanica.  This site stocks Dr Hauschka, Nvey Eco, SukiColor and Logona which I am familiar with and they are brands that receive good reviews.

I hope this
has been of interest and helpful.  Let me know if you try any of these brands, I would be interested to know if they are worth purchasing for myself.

ALWAYS READ THE SMALL PRINT

Time flies when you are having fun my blog is already a week old.  I hope you have enjoyed reading what I have posted so far?  Feedback good or bad is always welcome.

If you have been following my blog you will be aware that I like my beauty products to be natural and free of chemical nasties.  So what are these “chemical nasties” I keep mentioning and what makes a product natural?  A 100% truly natural product is one that is made from plant extracts and essential oils but it is also free from synthetic and toxic ingredients. I have compiled a list of the ingredients I try to avoid or limited in my skin care routine.

  • Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS)
  • Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLES)
  • Parabens – (Methylparaben/Propylparaben/Butylparaben/Ethylparaben)
  • Mineral oil and petroleum derived ingredients
  • Polyethylene Glycol (PEG)
  • Artificial Fragrance or Parfum
  • DEA or TEA (di- or tri-ethanolamine)
  • Formaldehyde ( Formalin/ formal and methyl aldehyde DMDM Hydantoin and Urea-Imidazolidinyl)
  • Triclosan
  • Phthalates (DBP/DMP/DEP)
  • Lanolin
If you would like more detailed information about why these ingredients are believed to be toxic, then I recommend taking a look at Love Lula Handmade Naturals.  If you would like to look up ingredients for yourself then start with the EWG's Skin Deep Cosmetics Database.

Go ahead and read the small print on labels, you will be surprised by what you find.  How many of you are using products that contain the above ingredients?

TREAT YOURSELF TO SOME GOODSTUFF

Facial moisturisers can be expensive but Goodstuff Organics Goji Berry & Acai Berry Antioxidant moisturiser is a bargain.  The brand is from USA but I discovered it at Beautynaturals.com.  It costs £9 for a 75ml tube.

I have dry skin and this moisturiser is hydrating despite it's light texture.  I adore the fragrance it is extremely fruity so may not appeal to all.  Best of all it contains fair trade ingredients but no parabens, synthetic dyes or sulphates and is not tested on animals.  As you will see from the picture the packaging is simple but colourful and appealing, it is also eco-friendly.

If you are on a budget and want to reduce the levels of toxins in your moisturiser you may wish to try this one.  This product does contain preservatives which have been associated with skin irritation, it is not 100% natural.

Ingredients - Water (Aqua, Eau), Propylene Glycol, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Glyceryl Stearate, PEG-100 Stearate, Polyisobutene, Organic Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Organic Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Organic Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Organic Lycium Chinense (Goji) Fruit Extract, Ribes Rubrum (Currant) Fruit Extract, Euterpe Oleracea (Acai) Fruit Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Tocopherol, Bisabolol, Allantoin, Sorbitan Stearate, Stearic Acid, Cetyl Alcohol, Dimethicone, Carbomer, Triethanolamine, Diazolidinyl Urea, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Fragrance (Parfum).

OOH LA LA LET'S GET NAKED

My passion for chemical free beauty was triggered by a long period of unhappy, itchy and dry skin. The first lesson I learnt was SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulphate) is a harsh detergent used as a degreaser and foaming agent. I read articles online that suggested SLS was an irritant to sensitive skin.

I can honestly say that for me my first try of SLS free shower gel changed my life and I have never looked back. My itchy and dry skin was gone almost immediately. So over the years I have tried many SLS free brands sold online and then I discovered on the high street Naked Bodycare.  My favourite Naked body wash is Ooh La La Coco De Mer. I love it so much that I add it to my Christmas Wish list!

I use it with a buff puff and it makes a lovely rich creamy lather which is impressive since it is SLS free. I adore the smell. I am not great at describing scents but it is feminine and not overpowering. Naked describe this body wash as "an intoxicating fragrance blended with moisturising coconut derivatives and passion flower extract".  My skin never feels dry or tight after using meaning I often skip moisturising my body.  Value for money is excellent - £3.79 for 250ml in Boots.

Check out Naked Bodycare as they have a wide range of products all of which are made from 97% naturally derived ingredients without sulphates, parabens or petrochemicals, vegetarian and vegan friendly.  Naked products do contain preservatives and their response to this is - "For us, it’s all about choice - about preferring to reduce our toxic load and use as many friendly ingredients  as possible."

Have you tried Naked Bodycare? What did you think?

FYI - This shower gel does contain colours & preservatives which have been associated with allergies and contact dermatitis. Ingredients - Aqua, Sodium cocoamphoacetate, Sodium lauroyl sarcosinate, Cocamidopropyl betaine, Lauryl glucoside, Coco glucoside, Glyceryl oleate, Glycerin, Passiflora incarnata (Passionflower) oil, , Caprylic/capric triglyceride, Pogostemon cablin (Patchouli ) leaf oil, Parfum, Xanthan gum, Citric acid, Sodium citrate, Sodium hydroxymethylglycinate, CI 17200, Benzyl Benzoate, Linalool, Limonene, Benzyl Salicylate

HEAD TO THE TROPICS

A few years back I discovered Tropic Pure Plant Skin Care at the Vitality Show and fell in love with the scrub and moisturiser which I purchased.  I had stop using it for a while for no particular reason but was excited to re-discover the brand at the Vitality Show in March 2011.

I did not recognise the products at first because it has been rebranded and repackaged.  I like the new design, the old glass jars were quirky but the new design gives it a sophisticated feel.  The line has also been expanded and reformulated.

At the Tropic stand I was able to test the products again and I instantly remembered why I had loved these products so much.

At that time I was only in need of a moisturiser so I snapped up a jar of Skin Revive Firming Nourishing Cream.  I shall put it simply I think this moisturiser is amazing and it has become my desert island favourite.  The cream is luxurious but not heavy, it is nourishing and melts into your skin leaving it soft and hydrated.  A little goes a long way, I am almost halfway through the 50ml size and I bought it at the end of March.

The fragrance is fresh and unusual there is a hint of lemon and herbs, which I think you will either love or hate.

My sister purchased the cream, toner and cleanser.  She recently told me she felt her skin had improved, she felt it was glowing and no longer dull.  We both agreed that we had found a range that rivals Liz Earle.

My sensitive skin is finally happy and best of all Tropic is 100% natural, 100% vegan and 100% cruelty free.

PAMPER YOUR POUT

I finally have got around to trying out the Gwdihw Smoochy Lip Balm my Sister gave me for Christmas.  She treated me to the cherry flavour and it is delicious.  More importantly I love the fact that the balms are handmade in Wales using 100% natural ingredients.  The cute packaging is an added bonus and the tin is the perfect size for pockets.

I love the way my lips feel after using this product.  They feel soft, moisturised and the effects last so I do not continually have to re-apply during the day.  The balm is solid which I prefer.  I hate the lip balms where you dig your finger in and get a blob of product, like when you stick your finger into Vaseline.  With those balms it feels sticky and one gust of wind results in your hair glued to your face.  Gwdihw lip balm melt into a silky oil consistency and sink into your skin without leaving a residue.

Smoochy lip balms come in a variety of flavours - vanilla, pineapple, cherry and orange & lemon. Individually they cost £4.49

Do check out the Gwdihw website, as lip balms are not the only products they make.

Sending out an SOS - Barefoot Botanicals

During the winter months my face becomes extremely dry and I break out in patchy eczema on my body.  In a bid to combat both I recently purchased Barefoot Botanicals S.O.S Rescue Me Face & Body Cream

Barefoot Botanicals scores brownie points with me because the product range does not contain chemical nasties, is suitable for vegans and cruelty free.  The most exciting part is the S.O.S range is suitable for people who may be prone to eczema and psoriasis.

The cream is rich, hydrating, easily absorbed and not greasy.  I can apply make up over the top without any problems.  I adore the smell, it is delicate and fruity/citrus.  I used the cream morning and night and saw an improvement within the first few days.  After a month of daily use my face was no longer flaky and I decided to stop using it and go back to my regular moisturiser.

As well as treating my face I liberally applied to my eczema patches.  I found the cream very soothing and calmed itching.  My eczema did not disappeared but was more manageable and hydrated.

Like many people at the moment I am counting pennies so the only downside is price (50ml tube is £9.95 & 100ml £17.95).  Don't get me wrong I am of the opinion that this is an amazing product and the results for me have been fantastic.  Since my eczema does not cover a large area of my body a tube lasts me a bit longer by simply keeping it for those SOS moments.

I recommend you take a look at the Barefoot Botanicals website as the S.O.S range also includes face wash, foot cream, hand cream, body lotion, shampoo and conditioner.  There is also the Skincare Clinic section which covers a variety of topics including eczema.

Here are some links to websites that sell the range

THE SUN HAS GOT HIS HAT ON

Yesterday the sun was shining and that made me think about sun creams/lotions.  We all know that sun protection is important but finding a brand suitable for my sensitive skin and eczema is not an easy task.

The dilemma for me each year is whether to buy a chemical free sunscreen or a chemical one.  I have had skin reactions from both types so I sit on the fence with this.  Often my reason for purchase simply boils down to my budget at that time.

The only high street brand that does not bring me out in a rash is Garnier Ambre Solaire.  My personal favourite from the range is the Light & Silky Milk.  It really does what it says on the bottle.  It is easily to apply and disappears into the skin with little effort.  By the end of the day I do not get that sticky feeling that makes you want to head straight into the shower and exfoliate.

If you have a few more pennies in your pocket and want to try a chemical free sun cream I recommend trying Lavera Sun Care line.  From the range I have tried the sun cream for body, face and the shimmer aftersun.  I loved them all.  The lotions have a nice fragrance, are easy to apply as not to heavy and absorb into the skin nicely.  I have check online and I notice that the sun care line has a new look and formulas.  I have yet to try these out.

The other year I was on a beach holiday in Europe and I came out in a nasty rash.  I can not be sure of the cause but the first thing I did was buy a new sun cream. I purchased Avene sun care in a local chemist.  The lotion was light and easy to apply, no chalky residue and is also paraben free.  I have not tried purchasing this within the UK but I am sure there must be a stockist online.

I have heard good things about sun protection ranges from Liz Earle, Green People and Proderm Sun Mousse but I have not tried them for myself.

Have you tried these brands?  What did you think?  What are your thoughts about chemical free sun protection? Do you have any recommendations for me?

Website Recommendation

Handmade Naturals Blog

I recommend Handmade Naturals website for natural skincare products without the nasty ingredients such as parabens and SLS.  Prices are reasonable and the customer service is excellent.  I particularly like the shower gels and baby oils.  Rossi is always willing to answer your questions or offer advise for a particular problem.

So where do I begin?

To give you some background, I have eczema which is linked to food allergies.  This was disgnosed 24 years ago by Doctors.  Back then things were very different, information limited and specialised products hard to find. About five years ago my eczema flared up.  Since my diet was not the problem I set to work finding a solution.  I do not remember how it started or where I plucked the information from but I became interested in possible links between chemicals in beauty products and allergies.  Armed with this new information I slowly overhauled my beauty cabinet with chemical free products and my eczema almost disappeared overnight.  Now I'm not claiming that I'm cured but I certainly have things back under my control.

I have been following a variety of beauty blogs and vlogs in recent weeks.  I have a few favourites and I enjoy what they have to offer but I feel there is a lack of recommendations for people with eczema and allergies.  I am also horrified at the price some people are willing to pay for beauty products.  Like many people in this current economic climate I do not have the money in my purse for "high end" brands.

So this is where I begin with my blog, with the idea that I can provide informative tips to fellow eczema and allergy sufferers.
